EU aims for Healthy soil by 2050

A new EU initiative to have healthy soils by 2050 was launched in Brussels today (Wednesday 17/11).

The European Commission announced details of its EU Soil Strategy which sets out a raft of measures for the protection, restoration and sustainable use of soils in the bloc.

Every year about one billion tons of soil are washed away by erosion in the EU leading to an estimated €1.25 billion loss of agricultural production annually.

The EU’s Commissioner for the Environment, Oceans and Fisheries  - Virginijus Sinkevičius - says aiming for healthy soils by 2050 will be essential to fight climate change.
