EU mainland inaugurates first spaceport

The first spaceport on mainland Europe has been inaugurated in a ceremony in northern Sweden. The spaceport, 120 miles north of the arctic circle, aims to become “Europe’s gateway to space”. It comes just days after the UK’s first spaceport in Cornwall suffered the disappointment of a failed launch of its first mission. Speaking at the ribbon-cutting ceremony in Lapland this morning, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said the state-of-the-art facility in Sweden will open up new possibilities for Europe.
