EU support as fertiliser prices soar

The European Commission has announced help for farmers struggling to pay for fertilisers with prices, in some cases, up 70 percent compared to two years ago. Speaking in the European Parliament a short time ago, the European Commissioner for Agriculture, Christophe Hansen, said there will be short term emergency support for farmers and more flexibility with Common Agricultural Policy payments. And in the long term, he wants to a shift to more environmentally friendly fertilisers that are not reliant on fossil fuel imports from the Middle East.
